We’re back with another grab bag of science-y questions. From dinosaurs to bananas, getting a 5 out of 5 would sure be a-peel-ing!

#1. Which of the following is not a dinosaur?

Elasmosaurus was a plesiosaur, a reptile that lived entirely in water during the Late Cretaceous period about 80 million years ago. Dinosaurs were all land-dwelling animals.

#2. Where in the Solar System would you find asteroids called trojans?

Trojans are asteroids that share a planet’s orbit. Earth has two trojans that orbit just ahead of our planet. Most of the Solar System’s trojans – more than 7,000 – can be found in Jupiter’s orbit. Some orbit just ahead of Jupiter and others orbit just behind.

#3. The centre of an atom is called the nucleus. What elementary particles can be found in a nucleus?

Every nucleus has at least one proton. Many nuclei also have neutrons. Protons and neutrons are made of smaller bits called quarks.

#4. Which element is added to fireworks to make them appear red?

Strontium is a metallic element commonly added to fireworks to make an intense red colour. Perhaps surprisingly, copper produces blue. Helium is a gas and not typically added to fireworks. Uranium is dangerously radioactive so would be a very bad element to put into fireworks!

#5. True or False? Bananas are radioactive

True. Bananas naturally contain a kind of potassium that slowly breaks apart, making them radioactive. The total dose of radioactivity from one banana is extremely small, and your body gets rid of the potassium quickly through your urine.
