#1. What disease did pirates often get because they didn’t eat enough fruit?

Scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin C, a nutrient critical to the body’s tissues, immune system and blood cells. Vitamin C is found in fruit, especially citrus, strawberries, and even capsicum! Make sure you get enough in your diet to avoid the fate of many a pirate.

#2. Nutritionists classify 3 main types of nutrients that provide energy to our bodies, also called macronutrients. Which of the following is NOT a macronutrient?

Your body gets its energy from fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, which you might recognise from food labels. Fibre is mostly made of carbohydrates too, but the molecules are too large for your body to digest.

#3. About how much water should a kid aged 9-13 years old drink in a day?

The Victorian Government recommends that kids aged 9-13 should drink 5-6 cups of water each day. Some desert animals, like the Australian hopping mouse, can get all the water they need from food, but sadly humans do not have this ability.

#4. There are 9 essential amino acids that we have to eat, because our bodies can’t make them. Which of the following vegetarian meals contain all 9 essential amino acids?

All of these dishes combine incomplete sources to get all 9 essential building blocks of proteins (also called amino acids). There are a few vegetarian foods that on their own deliver all 9, including soybeans, quinoa, and pistachios.

#5. Which of the following gives a scientific definition of a Calorie?

A Calorie (also known as a kilocalorie) is a unit of energy, not of health or of weight. A device called a calorimeter can measure how much energy is in a particular food by burning it and then measuring how hot the surrounding water gets.
